What is Areola Reduction Surgery?

Whether from genetics, age, pregnancy or significant weight loss, the pigmented area around the nipple, known as the areola, can become enlarged or out or proportion. Areola reduction surgery is a cosmetic procedure to reduce the areola’s size, adding proportion and enhancing appearance. To achieve desired results, excess tissue is removed from around an incision on the outside of the areola. Areola reduction takes approximately one hour and is typically performed under local anaesthesia. As an outpatient procedure, patients can return home the same day as surgery and sometimes take up to a week off work. A return to full activity can be expected within 3–4 weeks and final results are usually achieved after a couple of months, once the majority of swelling dissipates.
